More About Us
We began our efforts in the spring of 2011 and have now collected nearly $90,000. We continue to accept donations for this project with any additional money dedicated to enhancement and maintenance of the Veterans Memorial.
The city of Elgin dedicated a very special tribute
to the city’s veterans in 2008 with the opening of the $750,000
Elgin Veterans Memorial Park. While there are various tributes
scattered throughout the community to honor those who has served
during specific time periods, this Memorial was deigned to honor
all veterans who had served during both peacetime and in war.
Attendance at the new Memorial has grown dramatically especially during holidays
such as Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Unfortunately, floral tributes into the
Fox River during these ceremonies, has become a rather undignified event because
of the undeveloped shoreline.
Our proposed addition will greatly improve waterfront services and the new addition
will stand as a year round tribute to veterans interred at sea. We also hope
to add interpretative signage to help visitors better understand the role of
veterans in our community.
The success of this project was made possible by over 700 people throughout the
community who purchased one of our “Supporter” pins. Many others
have donated larger amounts including some who have given $5000 and more to purchase
naming rights to one of the small gardens. Click here
to view the donor slideshow.
Along with city officials, we are working with the city of Elgin, Hitchcock Design
Group and SMC, Inc. to move the project forward. We hope for a dedication sometime
